During today’s lecture we talked about the sense of presence, not only of yourself but also the presence of others. We discussed how architecture enables or disables us to feel the company of ourselves and others as we enter, gather in and leave a building. The thoughtful use of form, material and structure create sensorial feelings in a certain environment.
We think that for one to feel presence in a building they must physically enter it, and that you cannot sense the same feelings if you were to just look at photos of it. You sense presence through the precise craft and unique character of architecture. One must physically be inside a building to be fully engaged in its environment.
We wonder how an architect can build something to create the sense of presence. A building is made up of physical properties and materials, yet our senses are untouchable, they are only thought of in our minds and felt in our hearts. How can the physical impact the senses so much that intense emotional expressions are often seen when one enters a building, from tears to smiles. We think that this is one of the successes architects can strive to achieve, and as students we are only beginning to learn about this.
