High Line Project, NY

Photo Taken By Iwan Baan 2009

After discussing the idea of new territories in class, and being introduced to the High Line Project in New York we became very interested and decided to dig deeper into the project itself. The Highline was a railway built in the 1930’s in Manhattan in the infrastructure project called West Side Improvement. It was a working railway up until the 1980’s, not long after the railway was going to be demolished. This is when non-profit organization Friends of the Highline formed to fight against destruction.  1 Friends of the Highline fundraised to help maintain the railway as a park. James Corner Field Operations, landscape architects and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, architects began the design of the park in 2006. 1 Section 1 of the Highline Park was completed and open to the public and 2009 and Section 2 completed in 2011. 1 The complete park will run 1.5 miles long. 2 The park contains lighting, movable seating, concrete pathways and natural plants. 2
As a group we find this project extremely interesting because in the midst of a busy city the designers have created an oasis of natural plantings. The park is perfect for those that like a good walk as well as individuals that enjoy a rest on a park bench. Many people never would have imagined this old industrial railway territory becoming a beautiful and peaceful escape from city life.
